Does Threads train on your data?
Threads runs on the Meta Privacy Policy, whose UK text names AI development as a purpose and public posts as its input. The way out is the objection form on Meta's AI page.
"In our interest, and in the interests of users and third parties, to develop and improve artificial intelligence technology while ensuring appropriate safeguards, such as improving model responses for safety and accuracy."

How we read it: Threads has a Supplemental Privacy Policy of its own, captured 6 September 2026 from Instagram's help centre (40 paragraphs). It covers what Threads collects and defers to the Meta Privacy Policy for the rest, "as further described in the Meta Privacy Policy". It has no training language and no control. So the grade is the Meta Privacy Policy's: the clause quoted is that policy's UK-served text, and the route is the one Meta's generative-AI page names, an objection request through your account, which the steps quote. A form to find rather than a setting: a D, as the Meta entry is.

What the document does offer
- In the Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy: "settings and preferences" as profile information collected, and the private/public profile audience choice — nothing about AI or training
- The deferral: "as further described in the Meta Privacy Policy"
Why none of it applies: The Threads supplement names no AI use and no control. The document that governs it, the Meta Privacy Policy, is searched in the Meta entry's own control search: no setting, form or objection route is named there either.
The Threads supplement is the same everywhere and says nothing about training. The governing document differs by where it is read: the Meta Privacy Policy's US-served text, as captured by the Internet Archive on 1 June 2026, lists interactions with AI at Meta among the information collected and names no AI-development purpose. Whether it now says what the UK text says is not something this site can read from here, so US accounts stay unresolved, as they do in the Meta entry.
- Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy (help.instagram.com/515230437301944), browser-rendered capture of 2026-09-06, 40 paragraphs · Meta Privacy Policy, US-served text, Internet Archive capture of 2026-06-01, as read for the Meta entry
- train, training, model, models, artificial intelligence, machine learning

None of the terms appears in the Threads supplement. In the Meta US text the only matches are one "artificial intelligence" and one "machine learning", in a sentence about supporting research.

How to opt out of Threads AI training
Plan by plan, from what Threads's own policy says about refusing. Where it publishes the steps, they're listed here with the limits they carry. Where there's nothing to switch off, or nothing graded, this says so instead of inventing a menu path.
UK accounts
Yes, but not self-serve: Threads makes you contact support.
- Log in to the account you use with AI at Meta.
- Open facebook.com/privacy/genai/ and, under "You have rights related to how your information is used for AI at Meta", follow the link for your account to the objection form.
- Submit the objection. Meta emails a confirmation; an objection made after a training run has started applies to future runs.
US accounts
Not graded, so no route is pointed at.
What this policy has done since we started watching
The record starts here. Threads's policy was first captured on 6 Sept 2026, and there's no earlier copy to compare it against, so this verdict has no history behind it yet. From now on every re-read is diffed against that copy, and anything that moves appears here.
Vendor response
We wrote to Threads on 11 Sept 2026, quoting the clauses above and inviting a correction. Nothing has come back. That's published because a company declining to comment on its own policy is something a reader should know, and because the invitation should be on the record whether or not it's taken up. Any reply goes here, word for word.
