Does DeepSeek train on your data?
DeepSeek trains its models on what you type. An opt-out is listed, but only among rights that "may be available" depending on where you live, and you have to email for it.
"the right to opt-out of using your Personal Data for training our models or optimizing our technologies."

How we read it: Where this sits matters more than what it says: not in settings, but in a Your Rights list introduced as rights that "may be available to you", "depending on where you live and subject to exceptions". So whether you have this at all turns on your jurisdiction, and exercising it means emailing DeepSeek rather than changing a setting. Training itself is not conditional: the policy says outright that it uses your data to train its models. The controller is a company registered in Hangzhou, China.
opt-out, opt out, training, settings, object to, by default, default
What the document does offer
- "the right to opt-out of using your Personal Data for training our models or optimizing our technologies" — named for training specifically, in the rights list
- "You can control and access some of your Personal Data directly through settings" — "some", unspecified
- "you may also copy or delete your chat history via your settings"
- "The right to object to processing your Personal Data for direct marketing purposes" — marketing, separate
- "default" appears zero times in the capture
Why none of it applies: DeepSeek names a training opt-out as a right rather than as a setting, and gives no route for exercising it beyond the rights machinery. Chat history can be deleted in settings, which is a different thing — removing what is stored is not the same as excluding it from training, and the policy does not join them. No default is stated.

How to opt out of DeepSeek AI training
Plan by plan, from what DeepSeek's own policy says about refusing. Where it publishes the steps, they're listed here with the limits they carry. Where there's nothing to switch off, or nothing graded, this says so instead of inventing a menu path.

What this policy has done since we started watching
The record starts here. DeepSeek's policy was first captured on 13 Aug 2026, and there's no earlier copy to compare it against, so this verdict has no history behind it yet. From now on every re-read is diffed against that copy, and anything that moves appears here.

Vendor response
We wrote to DeepSeek on 18 Aug 2026, quoting the clauses above and inviting a correction. Nothing has come back. That's published because a company declining to comment on its own policy is something a reader should know, and because the invitation should be on the record whether or not it's taken up. Any reply goes here, word for word.
