Does Gemini train on your data?
Gemini trains Google's generative models on your chats, and people read some of them, unless you turn off Keep Activity. It never says which way that switch ships; reviewed chats are kept three years.
A self-serve opt-out exists
"Google uses your activity to provide, develop, and improve its services (including training generative AI models), as well as to protect Google, its users, and the public with the help of human reviewers. Data reviewed by service providers is disconnected from your account and saved for 3 years."

How we read it: Google's own hub for the Gemini app, not the general privacy policy. The switch is Keep Activity, in Gemini Apps Activity, and turning it off stops future chats being used "to improve its AI models" unless you send feedback; temporary chats are never used to train. What the page states a default for is audio and video ("aren't used to improve Google services by default"), never Keep Activity itself, which is the line between C and D here. Human review is explicit, and reviewed chats are held for three years "disconnected from your account" even after you delete your activity. Files added to a Notebook are "not used directly" for training.
Keep Activity, turn off, temporary chat, opt out, default, by default, object
What the document does offer
- "To stop your future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services, turn off your Keep Activity setting."
- "If Keep Activity is off and you don't submit feedback, Google also does not use your future chats to improve its AI models."
- "Temporary chats are not used to train Google's AI models."
- a stated default, for a different switch: "Your audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares aren't used to improve Google services by default."
- "Chats reviewed by human reviewers (and related data like your language, device type, location info, or feedback) are not deleted when you delete your activity. Instead, they are retained for up to three years."
Why none of it applies: The control is named, Keep Activity, and located, Gemini Apps Activity, and the page says in one sentence what turning it off achieves. It does not say which way the switch ships: "default" appears for audio and video, which are off, and for the 18-month auto-delete, never for Keep Activity. Even with it off, chats are kept for 72 hours and used to "help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers", and chats already reviewed stay for three years. "Object" appears only in the heading of a question about EU and UK rights.

How to opt out of Gemini AI training
Plan by plan, from what Gemini's own policy says about refusing. Where it publishes the steps, they're listed here with the limits they carry. Where there's nothing to switch off, or nothing graded, this says so instead of inventing a menu path.
All personal accounts (Gemini app and web)
Yes. Gemini has a self-serve setting.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity, from the menu in Gemini or at myactivity.google.com.
- Turn off Keep Activity. Future chats are then not used to improve Google's AI unless you send feedback.
- For a single conversation, start a temporary chat instead. Temporary chats are not used to train Google's AI models.
