Does Microsoft Copilot train on your data?
Copilot runs on Microsoft's privacy statement: your data may train its AI models. A switch, Training on conversation activity, sits in Copilot's settings; the statement never says which way it ships.
A self-serve opt-out exists
"As part of our efforts to improve and develop our products, we may use your data to develop, train, and fine-tune our AI models, including large language models (LLMs)."

How we read it: The Microsoft entry's consumer tier, under the product's own name: the governing document is the same Privacy Statement, and the switch is the one Microsoft documents for Copilot, "Training on conversation activity", with a second for voice. Two limits carry over. The statement says the training opt-out applies "in some markets" and never names them, and it never states which way the switch ships. One carve-out is stated in terms: "The information you choose to submit to Copilot Health" is "not used to develop or train generative AI models". Copilot for Microsoft 365 at work is a business product under different terms and is not graded here.
opt out, unless you opt out, in some markets, Training on conversation activity, default, Copilot
What the document does offer
- in the statement's Copilot section until September 2026: conversation data could help train its AI models "unless you opt out", "in some markets", markets unnamed; the statement captured 14 September 2026 no longer carries that sentence, and says of conversation data only that it is used "to provide and improve Microsoft Copilot"
- in the statement: "The information you choose to submit to Copilot Health" "is not used to develop or train generative AI models"
- on Microsoft's Copilot privacy-controls page (captured 2026-09-05): the switch, by surface, quoted in the steps
Why none of it applies: The opt-out is stated and the geography is not: the statement says it trains "unless you opt out" "in some markets" and never lists a market, a region or a legal test, so a reader cannot tell from this document whether the switch is theirs. "Default" does not describe the switch anywhere. The switch itself is documented on Microsoft's Copilot privacy-controls page, quoted in the steps, for the web, desktop and mobile apps.

How to opt out of Microsoft Copilot AI training
Plan by plan, from what Microsoft Copilot's own policy says about refusing. Where it publishes the steps, they're listed here with the limits they carry. Where there's nothing to switch off, or nothing graded, this says so instead of inventing a menu path.
All consumer accounts (Copilot with a Microsoft account)
Yes. Microsoft Copilot has a self-serve setting.
- Select your profile icon, then your profile name.
- Select Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity, and Training on voice conversations if you use voice.
Future conversations only. Microsoft offers the switch only when you're signed in, and, until September 2026, said it trained "in some markets" without naming them; that sentence has since left the statement.
- Select your profile icon, then Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Open the menu and select your profile icon.
- Select Account, then Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
What this policy has done since we started watching
The record starts here. Microsoft Copilot's policy was first captured on 10 Sept 2026, and there's no earlier copy to compare it against, so this verdict has no history behind it yet. From now on every re-read is diffed against that copy, and anything that moves appears here.
