Does WhatsApp train on your data?
WhatsApp says not even WhatsApp can read your messages or calls. Chats with AI at Meta inside it are different: Meta says they train its models unless you object through your account.
"As always, your personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. No one else, not even WhatsApp, can read or listen to them."

How we read it: Graded on the European Region text, which states the incapacity in as many words: not even WhatsApp can read or listen to personal messages and calls. The global text, under which UK and US accounts are served, says the same in other words — messages "are encrypted to protect against us and third parties from reading them" — and adds that delivered messages are not kept on WhatsApp's servers. What WhatsApp does hold sits outside this grade and both texts say so at length: your number, contacts, groups, usage, device and log information, and the fact and timing of messages rather than their content. Chats with AI at Meta are the exception, and the next tier.
"You can also submit an objection request through your WhatsApp account about your messages with AIs on WhatsApp being used to develop and improve AI at Meta."
- 6 Sept 2026
- AI at Meta features inside WhatsApp (optional)
- uk
- Saved by hand — not re-read automatically

How we read it: WhatsApp's own policy says the AI at Meta features are optional, lists what Meta receives to run them, and says nothing about the conversations. Meta's generative-AI page, saved the same day, does: "Your interactions with features that are part of AI at Meta" are a named training source, and its objection sentence names WhatsApp itself. So this tier is graded on Meta's page, cited as the clause: on by default once you use the feature, with an objection request through your WhatsApp account as the way out. A form to find, so a D. Personal chats stay under the A above; Meta says private messages are not used "unless you or someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with our AIs".

How to opt out of WhatsApp AI training
Plan by plan, from what WhatsApp's own policy says about refusing. Where it publishes the steps, they're listed here with the limits they carry. Where there's nothing to switch off, or nothing graded, this says so instead of inventing a menu path.
Personal messages and calls (all accounts)
There is nothing to opt out of. WhatsApp's own policy says it can't reach the content, so training on it isn't something a setting controls.
AI at Meta features inside WhatsApp (optional)
Yes, but not self-serve: WhatsApp makes you contact support.
- Open facebook.com/privacy/genai/ and, under "You have rights related to how your information is used for AI at Meta", follow the WhatsApp link to the objection form.
- Submit the objection about your messages with AIs on WhatsApp.
- Meta emails a confirmation; an objection made after a training run has started applies to future runs.

Vendor response
We wrote to WhatsApp on 11 Sept 2026, quoting the clauses above and inviting a correction. Nothing has come back. That's published because a company declining to comment on its own policy is something a reader should know, and because the invitation should be on the record whether or not it's taken up. Any reply goes here, word for word.
