Does Monzo train on your data?
Monzo does train AI on customer data — but only where it cannot anonymise it first, and it bars its AI suppliers from training on you at all.
"object to us using your data for direct marketing and where your data is processed on the basis of 'legitimate interests', or for research and statistical reasons"

How we read it: Monzo trains, and says so in a section headed Artificial intelligence: "We may also use your data to train and analyse the performance of our AI systems. We'll only do this if it's not possible to anonymise your data." That inverts the usual order — anonymisation is the rule, training on identifiable data the exception. But no training-specific opt-out is offered: the app's controls cover marketing and personalisation, and the only exit is the statutory objection right quoted here, which reaches training if training rests on legitimate interests. It is one item in a bulleted list of rights, which is where the quote ends. A bank sees salary, rent, health spending and everywhere you go.
opt out, object to, legitimate interests, toggle, Privacy & security, withdraw consent
What the document does offer
- "object to us using your data for direct marketing and where your data is processed on the basis of ‘legitimate interests’, or for research and statistical reasons" — the route this grade rests on
- "You may opt out of us using your data ... to personalise marketing ... by turning off the personalised messaging toggle in ‘Privacy & security’ in the ‘Settings’ section of the app" — marketing, not training
- "You can withdraw this consent at any time by turning off the “showing you relevant ads” setting" — advertising
- consent withdrawal via the app or customer services, with the caveat that it "does not make prior processing based on consent invalid"
Why none of it applies: Monzo has real in-app toggles and every one of them governs marketing or advertising. The only route reaching the training sentence is the statutory objection to legitimate- interests processing, exercised by contacting Monzo rather than by a setting. A bank with a privacy section in its app, and no switch in it for the thing this site grades.

How to opt out of Monzo AI training
Plan by plan, from what Monzo's own policy says about refusing. Where it publishes the steps, they're listed here with the limits they carry. Where there's nothing to switch off, or nothing graded, this says so instead of inventing a menu path.

Yes, but not self-serve: Monzo makes you contact support.
- In the Monzo app, open Help and start a chat, or email help@monzo.com.
- Say you object to your data being used where Monzo relies on legitimate interests, or for research and statistical reasons, including training models.
Monzo names no route specific to this; its general contact routes are it.
What this policy has done since we started watching
The record starts here. Monzo's policy was first captured on 17 Aug 2026, and there's no earlier copy to compare it against, so this verdict has no history behind it yet. From now on every re-read is diffed against that copy, and anything that moves appears here.

Vendor response
We wrote to Monzo on 18 Aug 2026, quoting the clauses above and inviting a correction. Nothing has come back. That's published because a company declining to comment on its own policy is something a reader should know, and because the invitation should be on the record whether or not it's taken up. Any reply goes here, word for word.
